Random amusement

This is a map legend from a map in Newnes Motorists Touring Maps and Gazetteer (undated on the copyright page, apparently ca. 1940), containing "complete section maps of the British Isles", along with various other helpful things such as vertical sections showing that there is for example a quite large hill on the road between Manchester and Derby.

I am particularly amused by the last symbol on the list, which is used quite a number of times on the map.
